10/28/2011 — Rain ponchos are useful, but they tend to be disposable items. Many people throw them out after only a few uses, largely because they are not very durable and can be hard to dry out properly.

A British company Comp Bio Products, has come up with a poncho called the Spudcoat that is not only biodegradable, but grows potatoes from its remains as well. Made of bioplastic, which breaks down completely when it decays, it also comes with a clay ball full of potato seeds that grow afterwards. It’s one less addition to plastic in landfills and one more for the compost heap. Price: £7.99 (or about $12.50).
