10/13/2011 — Germany-based solar project developer Solon has signed an exclusive global licensing agreement with US-basedAndersen Corporation for use of its Fibrex material in the photovoltaic (PV) market.

The Andersen product is a composite designed to combine the strength of wood with the flexibility of vinyl. Solon will utilise the material in its panels and said the characteristics of Fibrex mean PV panels will not require grounding while reducing heating and cooling requirements. It plans to release its first PV product using the material later this month and also aims to use the material in racking systems due to its light weight.

The composite material consists of 40 per cent pre-consumer reclaimed wood fibre from Andersen’s manufacturing operations and polymers, a portion of which are already reclaimed, adding to the green credentials of the product.

Scott Koenig, general manager of Andersen’s Fibrex strategic operations group, said, ‘Fibrex material from Andersen brings new, sustainable features to Solon’s technology. We’ve used Fibrex material with great success in our window products for nearly 20 years and we’re proud to be incorporating Fibrex material into proven renewable energy solutions by Solon.’

Dan Alcombright, CEO and president of North America for Solon, added, ‘Solon’s agreement with Andersen represents the aligning of two companies both laser-focused on innovation. This arrangement offers numerous opportunities to deliver innovative products to the residential, commercial and utility-scale PV markets. The unique Fibrex material properties are the ideal solution to the specific needs of these markets – for products that are fast, versatile, simple to install and lightweight.’

In August, Solon told NewNet that it is seeking strategic partners in the US as it changes its strategy in the country following the closing of its Arizona manufacturing plant.
